Korouoma in December and January gives you a couple of hours of blue twilight and no direct sun at all, and the canyon walls take another slice off the sky. It is beautiful and it is hard: a phone renders it grey, and a camera without a tripod renders it noisy. Handing the problem to someone with the right glass, who knows which bank of the Korojoki to shoot Ruskea virta from, is a reasonable use of fifty dollars.

The walls, measured
Korouoma's ice is bigger than photographs suggest, and the reserve publishes the dimensions: Tuulen tie spans 80 to 100 metres of cliff, Mammutti is 40 metres wide and 35 to 50 high, Ruskea virta rises to about 60 metres. Scale is the hard thing to convey, which is why a guide who shoots here regularly puts a person in the frame rather than the wall alone.
Mammutti's blue comes from a spring on the slopes of Yli-Voho Hill feeding it clear water all winter. That colour is real, not a preset, and it is strongest in flat overcast light rather than sun.
Distance is a rule, not a preference
The framing you will not get is the one from directly beneath. Metsahallitus asks visitors not to walk in under the falls because ice blocks and stones detach, and to watch climbers from a distance for the same reason.
That constraint shapes the whole shoot: everything is made from the trail, the far bank and the approach, which is exactly the local knowledge you are paying for on a six-and-a-half-hour day with no winter maintenance on the path.
